Disembodiment
In this collection, that I created over the summer of 2020, there is a verity of art techniques and styles that I had developed. While in a program, UWM Arts ECO, I created a multitude of works. I tried new forms of 3-dimensional art and went back to old 2-dimensional techniques that I have not used for awhile.
With the pre-collage program I learned new types and techniques on how to cast objects. One example is the artist Mark Jenkins. He uses his sculptures, and they environment that he places them in to make a statement. In one of his collections he used a technique of casting objects in cling wrap, then putting clear tape over it the give the work more structure. After the whole surface is covered in the clear type the object is taken out of the tape cast, leaving a clear shell of the original object. We used this technique in one of the classes, using it I created Baby Abyss. On UWM's campus I placed the cast in a mirroring pond, making the doll look like it was suspended in space, or an abyss. I wanted the doll to be floating in water to show how eerie and unsettling it is to see a baby figure alone in water. It is not a common sight. Here I think the environment is what makes this work stand out.
Another technique I learned through this class is how to make body castings. With a product named Alja Safe I was able to create a mold of my hand. After the mold sets then in goes plaster, and after that sets you get a plaster copy of your hand (or whatever object was cast). I did this for Green Thumb. To document this work I used the environment to enhance the message I was trying to send, which is that nature will always be there. Even after people, the Earth will still continue to turn and thrive as it did before people. I also dabbled in digital editing, this is shown with my digital collage, titled: Self Portrait #14. I took two photos of myself and created a collage with them. This is another example of how I like to change and modify the human form to create something new. I also did this with Out of My Mind, shown in row four. I then did some more traditional art with paper and ink. Those works are Mind in Texture and Edith's Ink. Mind in Texture is a recreation of Self Portrait #14 but using different pen strokes. For my persons I used swirls to shade and create value, stippling for the smaller person, and cross hatching for the phone and jacket. For Edith's Ink I based the house off of a video game named Edith Finch. The entire game is based off of the strange structure and its inhabitants . The house has such an interesting form, I was inspired to recreate it. |
